AFRICAN UNION MID-TERM SUMMIT TO OPEN IN ABUJA , NIGERIA

 

Preparations are well underway for hosting the 4 th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union scheduled for Abuja , Nigeria . The Summit to be held from the 30 th to the 31 st January 2005, will be preceded by meetings of the Executive Council of the African Union from 27-28 th January 2005 and the Permanent Representative Committee from 24-25 th January 2005.

Some of the items scheduled for discussion at the Summit include HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis and Polio eradication; the report of the Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council as well as the report of the Heads of State Implementation Committee on NEPAD.

Meanwhile, a two-day African Union Civil Society Pre-Summit Consultative Meeting was today concluded at the Nicon Hilton Hotel Abuja to prepare ground for the official launching of Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC).

Other meetings scheduled on the margins of the AU Summit include a meeting of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) (24 th January, 2005), Pre-Summit Women's Consultative Forum (25 to 26 January) and the NEPAD Business Forum (28-29 January).

This Mid-term Summit of the African Union, the first to be held since the decision was adopted by the Assembly of the Union last July, marks a departure from the former one Ordinary Session per year of the African Union.
