THE SITUATION IN DARFUR
The African Union United
Nations Joint Special Representative
Mr. Rodolphe Adada, met
on Tuesday 28 January 2009
with the African Union Commission
Chairperson Mr. Jean Ping.
During this meeting the
JSR briefed the AU Chairperson
on the latest developments
in Darfur and on the progress
being made by the Mission
in the fulfillment of its
mandate. The JSR reaffirmed
that UNAMID will continue
to assist in the search
for a lasting peace in Darfur
and to provide protection
for the civilians despite
the numerous challenges
which include the recent
escalation of tension as
a result of the fighting
between parties. He also
informed the Chairperson
about the status of deployment.

The Chairperson of the African
Union Commission, HE Jean
Ping Commission held his
monthly press conference
today, Tuesday 27 January
2009, at the headquarters
of the AU in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia. During the press
conference, Chairperson
Ping addressed issues relating
to peace and security in
Africa, specifically Darfur,
Zimbabwe, Somalia and the
coups d’etat of the
last six months. When talking
about the coups in Guinea
and Mauritania Mr Ping said
that it was true that some
states in Africa had taken
a step backwards but that
there had also been good
news, such as the peaceful
elections in Ghana. The
press conference was intended
to address the agenda of
the 12th AU Summit, the
theme of which is Infrastructure
Development in Africa. He
said that an additional
theme, the financial crisis
had been imposed upon the
summit because of the global

TO THE PRESIDENTIAL RE-RUN
ELECTION IN GHANA CONDUCTED
ON 28 DECEMBER 2008
It will be recalled that during
the Presidential and Parliamentary
elections of Ghana held on
7 December 2008, the Presidential
part of it was not decided
because of the guidelines
of Ghana’s constitution
which stipulates that the
winner of the presidential
poll must obtain more than
50% of the valid votes cast.
Since no candidate met this
important criterion, the Electoral
Commission of Ghana declared
a re-run of the presidential
election on 28 December 2008.

- ARRIVAL STATEMENT
OF THE AFRICAN UNION MISSION
TO THE RUN-OFF PRESIDENTIAL
ELECTION
It would be recalled that
the 7 December 2008 Presidential
election in Ghana was inconclusive
because no candidate won the
stipulated more than 50% percent
of the valid votes cast. In
the circumstance, the Electoral
Commission of Ghana invoked
the relevant constitutional
provisions and declared a
re-run of the Presidential
election on the 28 December
2008.
