AU COMMISSION CALLS ON AU MEMBER STATES TO BE ALERT TO POSSIBLE SWINE INFLUENZA EMERGENCY IN AFRICA
Addis Ababa, 30 April 2009 - Recent incidences of the Swine influenza have caused alarm throughout the world. As of 29th April, the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a statement that Swine Influenza constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. In this regard, WHO has raised the alert from phase 4 to phase 5which means that the disease can no longer be contained and concerns have been expressed that it can become a global pandemic. Apart from Mexico where it originated from, cases of the swine influenza have been detected in Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland and Israel. Communiqué de presse en anglais

BUILDING PEACE AND SECURITY
The German government has agreed to finance the construction of the new building for the Peace and Security Department of the African Union (AU) estimated to cost about 20 Million Euro. The new building will be centrally located on the grounds of the AU in Addis Ababa, adjacent to the AU’s new Conference Center.

Washington, April 27 2009– A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) betweeen the African Union Commission and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria relating to the Headquarters of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the African Central Bank (ACB) was signed on 24th April 2009 by Dr. Maxwell M. Mkwezalamba, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Dr. Mansur Muhtar, Minister of Finance for Nigeria.
