A TRIUMPHANT PEACE DAY

August 2010 – The African
Union (AU) High-Level Retreat on
the promotion of peace, security
and stability in Africa kicked off
on Thursday 26 August 2010 in Cairo,
Arab Republic of Egypt. Holding
under the theme “Making peace
happen in Africa in 2010 and beyond:
Developing common strategies and
enhancing coordination”, the
Retreat is expected to explore ways
and means to make 21 September,
the International Peace Day, a resounding
success. Taking place within the
framework of the Year of Peace and
Security in Africa (YoPS), the Retreat,
which is a gathering of Senior Officials
and Special Envoys/Representatives
of the AU, YoPS Advisory Council
and AU Peace Ambassadors, amongst
other high level participants, is
also to seek a way to maintain sustainable
exchange of views and information
between actors involved in peacekeeping
in Africa. It is envisaged that
the Retreat will be institutionalized.

in order to bring financial,

On the second day of the Experts’
session of the Third AU Conference
of Ministers in charge of Communication
and Information Technologies
(CITMC-3) in Abuja, Nigeria,
from 3 to 7 August 2010, experts
brainstormed on e-Applications
such as Tele-Medicine and Tele-Education,
e-schools and e-Post. The e-
Applications provide online
access to certain services to
the end users. The objective
is to reduce costs and time
and ensure the sustainability.
The e- Applications also contribute
to Capacity building. In Africa,
several projects have been launched
successfully and are already

of the African Union (AU), H.E. Dr.
Bingu Wa Mutharika, President of the
Republic of Malawi, visited the AU pavilion
today Friday 30 April 2010, at the Shanghai
Expo village, China. President Mutharika
expressed satisfaction with the theme
chosen by the African Union for the
Shanghai World Expo 2010, « clean
energy for the management of mega cities
in Africa », which he said is
in line with the expo theme: “Better
City, Better Life”. The President

recent national referendum. The choice the people
of Kenya made was a choice to move forward to a brighter
future, with a new system of Government that promises
to bring about effective checks and balances and with
the people of Kenya having a greater say on how they
are governed and by whom and more importantly in determining
their own priorities in the developmental process.

August 2010 - On
23 August, the Chairperson of the African Union
Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, received UNAMID Deputy
Joint Special Representative, Mohamed Yonis, who
conveyed a message from the AU-UN Joint Special
Representative, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, relating
to the situation in Kalma IDP camp, one of the largest
camps in South Darfur. The camp has recently witnessed
deadly violence between IDPs who support and reject
the Doha Peace Process. Although tension in the
camp has de-escalated, there remains long-standing
insecurity in the camp.

The PRC Sub-Committee on the Special Emergency
Assistance Fund for Drought and Famine in Africa
(SEAF), at its 16th Extra-Ordinary Session, held
in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 12 May 2010, considered
the alarming food shortages in Niger, which put
more than 3.5 million people under a very critical
situation, and agreed to allocate a grant in the
sum of US$200,000 for food aid to mitigate the plight
