16 May 2007 - The Chairperson of the AU Commission Condemnsthe attack on AMISOM troops
The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Mr. AlphaOumar Konare, has learnt with utter shock and disbelief of the attack on the members of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which occurred today in
Mogadishu, while they were on patrol. He is deeply saddened by the death of four
and injury of other six soldiers, all from the Ugandan contingent as a result of thisunprovoked attack.

16 May 2007 - UNHCR HANDS OVER EQUIPMENT TO AU

On 16 May, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees handed over a server, a portable LCD projector and a high density scanner to the Department of Peace and Security at the African Union. The equipment, worth over $9000 was handed over by the UNHCR Regional Representative accredited to the African Union, Mr. Ilunga Ngandu to the Director of Peace and Security (PSC) Mr. Geoffrey Mugumya. more

In the framework of the EU-Africa dialogue, the 8 th Ministerial Meeting of the EU and African Troikas took place in Brussels , Belgium, on 15 May 2007. The meeting of Ministers was co-chaired by the Secretary General/High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the Council of the European Union, Dr Javier Solana and H.E. 14 May, 2007- CONTINENT HEADED FOR A UNITED STATES OF AFRICA- AU CHAIRPERSON


The African Union is at a turning point in its history, heading towards the United States of Africa. What remains now is to decide what strategy to take and at what pace.

This was said today by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Prof. Alpha Oumar Konaré as he received the credentials of the incoming Nigerian Permanent Representative to the AU H.E Dr Obioma Philip Oparah at the AU head office in Addis Ababa. The Chairperson’s comments came in the wake of the meeting of the Executive Council from 8-9 May, in Durban, South Africa where Foreign Affairs Ministers brainstormed on the state of the Union.

14 May, 2007-AU, RECS, G8 AND OTHER PARTNERS MEET ON PEACE AND SECURITY , Addis Ababa, Ethiopia




Addis Ababa, 14 May 2007- An annual consultation is taking place today, at the African Union in Addis Ababa, between the AU, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the G8 and other partners.

Co chaired by the ambassadors of Nigeria, in its capacity as Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for May and Germany, in its capacity as the Chair of the G8, the meeting is discussing many issues, among them; the establishment of the AU Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the status of preparations for the G8 Summit to be held in Helligendamn, Germany; and 2005 communiqués of the AU- G8 consultations.

The meeting is taking place in the context of the Joint Africa/ G8 Plan to Enhance African Capabilities to Undertake Peace Support Operations.



Chinese delegation from the Shanghai Institute for International Studies

African union Commission Delegation
Addis Ababa, 11 May 2007- A Chinese delegation from the Shanghai Institute for International Studies visited the African Union Headquarters on Friday 11 May, where they were welcomed by the Acting Chief of Staff Dr Salif Sada Sall and various members of the AU management and staff.

The Shanghai delegation, comprising 6 people was led by Professor Wang Xiaoshu. It sought to find academic linkages with Africa, especially in the area of research. Prof Wang said his delegation had a keen interest in three particular areas, i.e. the current situation, characteristics and trends concerning the politics, economy and security in Africa; Sino – Africa cooperation and Africa’s relations with other countries and regions. They were also interested in African integration and how the continent is pushing the exercise forward. more
