CONTINENTAL CONFERENCE ON ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN AGREES TO SET UP AFRICAN TRUST FUND FOR WOMEN
Lilongwe, Malawi 19 March 2008- The Continental Conference on the Economic Empowerment of African Women ended in the Malawian capital on 19 March 2008, with a broad agreement to set up an African Fund for Women to support women with grants, loans and revolving loans. The conference proposed mechanisms for the creation and operation of the Women’s Trust Fund and a roll out framework for the fund in accordance with AU Assembly decision AU/ Dec.134-164. Lilongwe, Malawi 17 March 2008- The Continental Conference on the Economic Empowerment of African Women successfully opened today in the Malawian capital, with speakers at the official opening ceremony calling for concerted effort to action all the plans that have been made to integrate women into the socio economic development of the continent. Over 100 participants from more than 20 AU Member States attended the opening ceremony, including 3 Ministers, 3 Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament, Ambassadors, and civil society. PRESIDENT WA MUTHARIKA TO DELIVER KEYNOTE ADDRESS TO THE CONTINENTAL CONFERENCE ON THE ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF AFRICAN WOMEN
Addis Ababa, 13 March 2007- President Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi will deliver the key note address to a Continental Conference, that seeks to come up with forward looking strategies, to address the bottlenecks faced in the economic empowerment of women, as well as to establish an empirical rationale for gender empowerment activities in Africa. The Seventy-sixth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) held in Durban, South Africa, in July 2002, adopted a Decision proclaiming 3rd March of each year as ‘Africa Environment Day’. The said Decision calls upon Member States to observe this day with the public. TREE PLANTING TO MARK AFRICA ENVIRONMENT DAY
Addis Ababa, 28 February 2008 – The African Union Commission will on 3rd March 2008, celebrate the sixth anniversary of the Africa Environment Day, under the theme: « Adapting to Climate Change for Livelihood Security in Africa». The main highlight for the Day will be a tree-planting programme at the Biofarm Enterprise in Ysta, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the presence of some partners and officials of the African Union.
