GOVERNMENT SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH AHLU
SUNNA
The Transitional
Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia
has signed a power-sharing agreement
with the Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a
(ASWJ) group. The Framework for Cooperation
Agreement was formally signed on 15
March 2010, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
during a ceremony chaired by the Chairperson
of the African Union (AU) Commission,

IS FRONTLINE IN GLOBAL FIGHT AGAINST
VIOLENT EXTREMISM
On 5 February 2010, Somali extremists
announced that they were forming an
alliance with Al Qaeda to establish
an Islamic state in Somalia and fight
a jihad across East Africa. This statement
crystallizes what is at stake in a country
that has been ripped apart by war for
two decades.

I am delighted to introduce this maiden
issue of the AMISOM News Bulletin, which
builds on the solid foundation laid
by our AMISOM Newsletter. The Bulletin
is an electronic bi-monthly round-up
of news and activities from the African
Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). It
is an informative record of the political,
economic and humanitarian efforts undertaken
by all stakeholders to achieve a peaceful
settlement of the conflict in Somalia,
as well as an update on the work of
our valiant peacekeepers on the ground.

praised AMISOM Force Commander Major
General Nathan Mugisha for his outstanding
character in boosting the morale of
his officers and men who continue to
show strong commitment and determination
in the performance of their duties despite

THURSDAY’S
ATTACK ON AMISOM BASE
The Special Representative of the
Chairperson of the AU Commission
for Somalia Mr. Nicolas Bwakira Friday
visited injured peacekeepers and Somali
civilians following Thursday’s
suicide attacks on AMISOM base in
Mogadishu.
At least 21 people comprising 4 Somalis,
5 Ugandans and 12 Burundians have
so far been confirmed dead . The figure
includes AMISOM Deputy Force Commander
Major General Juvenal Niyoyunguruza
. 40 others were injured during the
incident and so far 26 of them have
been evacuated to a hospital in Nairobi
for further medical attention. more |

AMISOM,
SOMALIA TFG MINISTERS SHARE IDEAS
The Deputy Special Representative of
the Chairperson of the AU Commission
for Somalia Hon. Wafula Wamunyinyi and
the Force Commander held discussions
with the TFG Minister of Defense and
the Minister of Information on key issues
affecting the Somali Transitional Government.
The two parties discussed progress on
the National Security Sector Reforms
including the payment of stipends to
the TFG soldiers and the disbursement
of funds from the Italian contribution.Weekly

KENYAN
DEPUTY SPEAKER VISITS MOGADISHU
The Deputy Speaker of Kenya’s
Parliament Hon. Maalim Farah Mohammed
has
assured Somalia’s Transitional
Federal Government and AMISOM of Kenya
in
particular, and IGAD’s support
to the peace process in Somalia. Weekly

BURUNDI
DEPLOYS THIRD BATTALION
Burundi has deployed
a third battalion to beef up the African
Union peace keeping force in Somalia.
The battalion which arrived last week
brings to slightly above 5 thousand
the total number of AMISOM force in
this horn of African nation.
Burundi and Uganda are currently the
only countries that provide troops
to the African Union peacekeeping
force in Somalia. The contribution
by the two countries has helped in
providing a good environment for dialogue
and reconciliation .The AMISOM forces
are protecting key government institutions
in Somalia such as the presidential
palace, the airport, the seaport,
key roads and provide escorts to humanitarian
convoys to mention but a few. Weekly

PARTNERS
AGREE TO SUPPORT SOMALIA
AMISOM in conjunction
with its partners IGAD,UN,LAS and
the Somali Transitional Government
held a two day Technical/Experts and
Ambassadorial meeting on capacity
building for Somalia in Nairobi Kenya
from 14 to 15 July .The meeting was
attended by representatives of 39
countries and 14 International organisations.

AMISOM
UNDERGOES PRE-DEPLOYMENT TRAINING
Staff from AMISOM
took part in a predeployment training
course at the Humanitarian Peace Support
School in Nairobi.
The Training Course which took place
from Monday June 8th to Friday June
12th was part of AMISOM’s preparatory
activities to deploy its civilian
component to Somalia . Thirty three
members of staff from AMISOM participated
in the training workshop. Weekly

UPDF
CLF VISITS AMISOM
The Chief of Land
Forces of the Uganda Defence Forces
(UPDF) Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, decorated
500 peacekeepers in Mogadishu with
medals in recognition of their role
in the African Union Mission in Somalia.
The troops who received the medals
belong to the first contingent of
the UPDF to go into the mission area.

PRESIDENT VISITS AMISOM
President Sheikh
Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of Somalia paid
a surprise visit to the Ugandan Contingent
of AMISOM on Tuesday 6th May. He
was received on arrival by the AMISOM
Force Commander, Maj Gen Francis Okello
and other senior ranking officers
of AMISOM.
The president was accompanied by the
Minister of National Security
Col Omar Hashi Aden and that of Defence
Mr Mohamed Abdi

DONORS
PLEDGE $213M FOR SOMALIA
The International
Conference in support of the Somali
Security Institutions and the African
Union Mission in Somalia was convened
by the United Nations Secretary General
following the request of the UN Security
Council in its resolution 1863 of
16 January 2009 under the joint auspices
of the African Union and United Nations
and hosted by the European Commission
and the European Union.
The Conference, which took place in
Brussels from 22 – 23 April,
was co-chaired by the UN Secretary
General Ban Ki-moon and the African
Union Chairman, Jean Ping. Weely

AMISOM
HAILS SOMALI LEADER
The Special Representative
of the Chairperson of The African
Union
Commission for Somalia Nicolas Bwakira
welcomed the firm declaration by President
Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed that AMISOM
should remain in the country to continue
the important role it is
undertaking.
The AU Special Representative who
was on a two day visit to Somalia
was speaking at the Somali State House
on Sunday while paying a courtesy
call on President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh
Ahmed.
President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed
on Saturday clarified his government’s
position on the issue following speculations
emanating from forces opposed to the
peace process that AMISOM is not needed
and should therefore leave Somalia.
