THE AFRICAN UNION OPERATIONALIZES THE TREATY OF PELINDABA

Addis Ababa, 5 November 2010: The First Conference of States Parties to the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba) took place at the AU Headquarters, in Addis Ababa, on 4 November 2010. The Conference was held in accordance with Article 12 and 14 of the Pelindaba Treaty. In particular, Article 14 stipulates that a Conference of all Parties to the Treaty shall be convened by the Depositary (the AU Commission) as soon as possible after the entry into force of the Treaty to, inter alia, elect the members of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (ACNE) and determine its headquarters. The Conference was attended by AU Member States Parties to the Treaty and other AU Members as observers, as well as by international partners. 26 October 2010 - The PRC Sub-Committee on the Special Emergency Assistance Fund for Drought and Famine in Africa (SEAF), held its 17th Extra-Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 26 October 2010 to consider the request from the Government of The Gambia for an emergency assistance to the people affected by devastating flood caused by the unusual continuous heavy rainfall. Addis Ababa, 15 October, 2010- The African Union Commission (AUC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Finland and the Global E-Schools today, Friday 15 October 2010. The signing ceremony took place at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The MoU was signed by H.E Professor Jean-Pierre Ezin, Commissioner for Human Resource Science and Technology of the African Union Commission and H.E Leo Olasvisrta, the Ambassador of Finish to Ethiopia.    

The MOU aims to support the implementation of the African Leadership in Information and Communication Technology (ALICT) programme.

Climate Change forum opens with calls for African leaders to move from rhetoric to action

Addis Ababa, 1st September 2010 - The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Jean Ping, received with sadness and regret, the news of the killing of 4 Ugandan peacekeepers serving the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). These peacekeepers died as a result of a mortar attack launched against their positions by the Al Shabaab, the same group which carried out last week’s terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of members of the Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP). The choice the people of Kenya made was a choice to move forward to a brighter future, with a new system of Government that promises to bring about effective checks and balances and with the people of Kenya having a greater say on how they are governed and by whom and more importantly in determining their own priorities in the developmental process.
