* AFRICAN UNION LOOKING TOWARDS A TRIUMPHANT PEACE DAY
Cairo, 27 August 2010 – The African Union (AU) High-Level Retreat on the promotion of peace, security and stability in Africa kicked off on Thursday 26 August 2010 in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt. Holding under the theme “Making peace happen in Africa in 2010 and beyond: Developing common strategies and enhancing coordination”, the Retreat is expected to explore ways and means to make 21 September, the International Peace Day, a resounding success. Taking place within the framework of the Year of Peace and Security in Africa (YoPS), the Retreat, which is a gathering of Senior Officials and Special Envoys/Representatives of the AU, YoPS Advisory Council and AU Peace Ambassadors, amongst other high level participants, is also to seek a way to maintain sustainable exchange of views and information between actors involved in peacekeeping in Africa. It is envisaged that the Retreat will be institutionalized. Press

Receiving Station is installed in the Botswana College
of Agriculture (BCA) through the framework of African
Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development
(AMESD). The Satellite Receiving Station was officially
launched by the Acting Principal of the BCA, Mr Ditshoke
L. Monametsi, at a ceremony held in 15 July 2010 in
Sebele, Botswana. The ceremony was attended by the
Director of Botswana Department of Meteorological
Services, Mr Phetolo Phage, Dean of Faculty of Agriculture
at BCA, Prof. Elemino B. Khonga, SADC-THEMA Project

DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA
Abuja, 4 August 2010 – On the
second day of the Experts’ session
of the Third AU Conference of Ministers
in charge of Communication and Information
Technologies (CITMC-3) in Abuja, Nigeria,
from 3 to 7 August 2010, experts brainstormed
on e-Applications such as Tele-Medicine
and Tele-Education, e-schools and
e-Post. The e- Applications provide
online access to certain services
to the end users. The objective is
to reduce costs and time and ensure
the sustainability. The e- Applications
also contribute to Capacity building.
In Africa, several projects have been
launched successfully and are already

a photo exhibition during its
15th AU Summit to be held in Kampala,
Uganda, from 19th to 27th July
2010 under the theme “Maternal,
Infant and Child Health and Development

in efforts to face the challenges

Addis Ababa 21 June 2010 – For the second
time this year, high officials from the Canadian
Government were briefing the African Union
today 21 June 2010, on the state of preparedness
of their government with respect to the upcoming
G8 and G20 Summits later this month of June
2010 in Canada.
A Report to that effect was released publicly
in Canada on 20 June 2010 and the same report

totalling 722,000 US dollars in support for

Addis Ababa, 1st September 2010 - The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Jean Ping, received with sadness and regret, the news of the killing of 4 Ugandan peacekeepers serving the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). These peacekeepers died as a result of a mortar attack launched against their positions by the Al Shabaab, the same group which carried out last week’s terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of members of the Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP). This latest attack also caused serious injuries to 17 other AMISOM peacekeepers. Press
